OPEN POSITION: HEAD GARDENER
phanganearthworks is looking for a resident head gardener, to be in charge of organic food production on our hillside property on Phangan island, Southern Thailand. We are looking for a highly motivated, skilled, and experienced individual to take on this task.

REQUIRED SKILL SET
This is not a position for a young enthusiastic WWOOFer, we're sorry.
Instead we are looking for a person with considerable experience in growing food, particularly in the tropics. We care less about certificates than an impressive track record. Our property is surrounded by jungle, and is everything but ideal agricultural land. The soil is for the most part quite rocky and to a lesser extent sandy, in short not your ideal topsoil to throw seeds.
We aim at growing seasonal produce for 15 people.
We expect you to be working in the garden an average of 4 solid hours daily, and believe that this will be sufficient to guarantee success.

WHY DON'T WE DO IT OURSELVES?
You may ask yourself this very question. After all, phanganearthworks is a place where people come and learn about alternative building techniques and permaculture, and the owners should therefore know all about it.
While that is partly true, in practice both Hubert and Julien are overcommitted and simply do not have the necessary hours available to sustain a consistent effort of keeping a vegetable garden afloat and flourishing. It's as simple as that. We love the idea of growing most of our veggies in front of our doorstep, but in practice haven't managed to do that for the past 2 years. Following a number of feeble attempts in the past, we now decided it was time for a different approach.

ACCOMMODATION
A simple but charming bamboo bungalow will be provided free of charge. The space comes with basic furniture, a matress and mosquito net. Cooking facility, toilet, and shower are all in walking distance.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS
A monthly salary of 12'000 THB (ca. 385 USD) will be paid out at the end of each calendar month.
On top of that you are entitled to attend our workshops free of charge.
Accommodation (see above) will be provided free or charge.
However, please note that food (other than what we grow on the land, of course) is not included nor will it be provided (in other words you will buy your own food items - the things you won't succeed in growing that is - and cook as you like). Besides the fact that we often have different schedules during the day, the main reason for this is that we do not have an operational communal kitchen at present. You will have access to a cooking facilty though.
