EARTHBAG DOME BUILDING WORKSHOP
phanganearthworks is stoked to announce a 3-week earthbag (EB) dome building workshop, to take place 18 February - 10 March 2012 on our property on Phangan island, Southern Thailand.

EARTHBAG BUILDING
Popularized by Iranian architect and builder Nader Khalili since the 1970s, natural building in general and earthbag building (EB) in particular are becoming more and more relevant in a world where housing becomes less and less affordable. Building with earthbags allows the use of local, natural materials for the filling which substantially lowers the embodied energy commonly associated with the manufacture and transportation of building materials. Using earthbags results in extremely durable and strong structures (in a whole range of climates), for a minimal amount of money (compared to conventional construction methods).

THE COURSE
Participants will learn all the basics of EB construction (with special reference to domes), and by the end of the course feel very confident to go build an entire dome by themselves. This workshop is suitable for anyone with an interest in this exciting natural building technique. Recommended for permaculture designers, natural builders, conventional builders, owner-builders, aid workers, and anyone else looking to expand their skills in creating safe and comfortable habitats for future generations. Freshmen welcome, NO earthbag experience required.
The dome to be built will be about 3.8m wide and about 4m tall and suitable for a wide range of uses from guest room to root cellar to meditation cave.

Compulsory reading prior to course begin:
All participants are expected to have read Earthbag Building - The Tools, Tricks and Techniques, by Kaki Hunter and Donald Kiffmeyer (2008), available on amazon.com.
The main focus is the hands-on practice and the completion of the entire dome by the end of the course. At times, classroom study as well as slideshows, film screenings, and inspection of existing EB buildings will supplement the practice. All students are required to be present for the full three weeks.

COST
Ttuition fee for this 3-week course is THB 39’600 (EUR 960).
Included in the course fee are simple accommodation on our property as well as full board - 3 delicious, home-made, healthy, vegetarian meals per day.

This dome building workshop will be taught by phanganearthworks co-founders Hubert Huot (left) and Julien Balmer (right). After extensive study of alternative building methods in general, and earthen construction techniques in particular, they met on Koh Phangan in 2007 and began conceptualizing what little later became an earthbag adventure. Together they have built five earthbag structures since, including a darkroom meditation dome and a spacious and rather luxurious 65 sqm house. For images, please access our galleries on this site.
